My first time: Yamato`s 1/6 Oneechanbara Aya

Ill introduce in the next days my very first figures i ordered back in late December 2007.My first order contained the following figures: Yamato`s 1/6 Aya,Medicom`s RAH Rei Ayanami and Monsieur Bome`s Jungle Emmy Combat Version.My figure knowledge was about Zero back then and i just looked for fairly cheap figures of series i liked.The figures are nowadays among the less detailed figures i own but have nevertheless a special place in my heart since they were my first.

Do you still like your first purchased figure?

Ill start of with Aya from Oneechanbara.Shes one of the few females that has recognized the advantages of fighting in boots + cowboyhat + bikini against hordes of zombies.:D

  • Name: Aya (who needs a last name?)
  • Scale: 1/6 -> about 29 cm
  • Manufacturer: Yamato
  • Design: I have no Idea probably one of the guys that is involved in TheOneeChanbara
  • Sculpt: Shunji Hagii
  • Castoff: Nope
  • Price: Paid around 30€ back then

Were looking at the mainprotagonist of the hack and slay DevilMayCry-esque budget game TheOneechanBara by Tamsoft/D3 .The main selling point of the game is that youll look at smoking hot babes instead of ugly old Dante while slashing through hordes of enemies.The game is mediocre at its best but found its selling formula.It has spawned several sequels and is getting a Wii release in NA/Europe in early 2009 named The OneechanBara: Bikini Zombie Slayers.Fans of trash rejoice!There was even a movie made!

This Sculpt was the very first figure from Aya and looks pretty dated to the new releases by Beat,Alter and Orchid Seed(All of these are sculpted after the OneechanBara:Vortex Aya while this Figure is sculpted after the first game).Aya was sculpted by Shunji Hagii who also sculpted the absolutely gorgeous GSC Nida Schuettlich and MaxFactories Black Lagoon Shenhua + Shining Wind Touka Kureha.When you compare her to his other works for GSC and MF youll begin to wonder if its Yamatos fault that shes looks so plain or due to time pressure (3 Sculpts in 3 months) on his side.My biggest complaint about her is that she is really really pale.I think that youll have a nice bodytan when you slash zombies in your bikini all day and not that youll look like a hikkikomori.While the overall paintjob is about average there are some nice details here and there like her painted fingernails or the print of the bikini.

While theres alot to complain about,theres one point where she definately scores: Anatomy.Hagii has put some nice details in the patella,the tendons in the back of the knee,scapula and the spine.This doesnt save the figure from beeing mediocre though.If you long for an Aya theres plenty of better figures to choose from now.Its too bad they werent back in 2007…

The pictures were taken with 2 different backgrounds like James did  a while ago with some of his figures.I uploaded them to Flickr and everything seems to work smooth.The pictures wont stay centered tough…If somebody has a hint on how to fix that please contact me.

Nice View on the anatomical details

  1. I like how colorful are her bikini and “gloves”. This character is funny in the way she looks completely “off-topic” regarding her zombie slayer status.

    But I am not really fond of Yamato products… and not really teased by her look. So I logically passed on this figure ^^;

    She looks great under your camera though.

  2. I cannot remember who my first figure was, but the current earliest figure I have will probably be GSC’s 1/8 Tsukamoto Yakumo from the series School Rumble. I still like it. Not as much as “love”, but I like it and she gets a display in the top shelf of honor too.

  3. I still love my first figure , but it’s impossible to not lover her , it must be Nagi by GoodSmile ^^

    And i love your pics , you did a great job and no i don’t thing that figure looks that bad , juste the face and hair are not that great but it’s Yamato and it’s not that new so yes ^^

    Still i think she’s quite nice and i love big figs so yes ^^

  4. any figure featuring a chick wielding a sword automatically gets +5 to desirability ^_^

    My first figure was a nendoroid nagato. she’ll always be a special part of my collection ^_^ (assuming i don’t break her. i’ve already bumped her off twice when she was sitting on the corner of my desk orz)

    She was also avaiable as a special coloured version with bloodstains and alternative colors.It made her a bit mor on topic but she looked really awful color wise.I prefer her colorful version^^
    Yeah Yamato isnt an A Company but i didnt know anything about manufacturers back then.

    @Panther
    If i remember right the GSC Yakumo was a swimsuit one?I prefer the SchoolRumble girls in their original outfits.Thats the reason why i passed the GSC Eri

    @James
    Yeah its hard to not like Nagi when shes manufactured by GSC^^
    She definately isnt that bad.She has like i wrote some nice features.Its only natural to lose to the newer ones by better manufacturers.

    @Meronpan
    Chicks with Guns/Swords get me more excited than the MOE-est figure n the world :D
    Treat her well!I assume you cant break her that easily since shes an robot?^^

  6. If I define a figure by those without articulations/joints then the Kotobukiya Candy Shana I got 2 months ago will be my first proper figure. Otherwise they’d be Yuna and Rikku from FFX-2 I got via ebay many moons ago.

    Collecting figures surely isn’t a cheap hobby; I don’t think I will be planning to collect anymore in the near future after the small ‘harvest’ this summer. Need to consider about space problem as well… T_T

  7. My first figure was Kotobukiya’s Mirei-san :P
    Wait no, my real first was Kotobukiya’s summer wear Asuka, which I had for years before I actually took her out and stood her next to Mirei o.O

    And oneechanbara lol. I have one of the ps2 games but it got stale pretty quick I stopped playing… That movie trailer is pretty funny though haha. Thought it was gonna be a CG movie which would have been kinda neat, but then it cut to live action and i was disappointed :( lol

    Hagii Shunji’s a great sculptor :P I’ve heard pretty much nothing but bad news about Yamato’s mass pvc adaptations, which kind of make me shy away from any of their other figures. Though a Pia Carrot figure I have is Yamato and it’s pretty nice… Guess they’re just totally hit and miss lol

    Its an expensive hobby indeed.I didnt plan to buy many figures after my first haul and now i have 10 Figures on preorder for fall/winter.
    Space is an important factor too.Im lucky to have enough space now.

    @suneo
    Firstoff: I like your taste.I wish i would have gotten my hands on Mirei-san back when she was released
    Oneechanbara is an pretty repetetive budget game but i have an pretty strong liking for bad games.^^
    I saw on your site that the Miku Kanu is also a sculpt by Shunjii Hagii.Had layed my eyes on her before but shes too expensive for my taste.Or is there a twist about her that i missed?
    Yamato seems to be a figure by figure case.Some look quite good and others are a total miss.I preordered their re-release of the Creators Labo Rei Ayanami and i hope that the its gonna be the same good quality like the firt run

  9. hehe thanks :P I managed to grab the red version of her as she was on sale at play-asia. She goes in and out of stock every now and then for sale at a cheaper price than what I got her at -_-. She’s definitely a keeper though :D

    I’m not sure myself why she’s so expensive. Daiki Kougyou’s figures I think have always been a bit more expensive than the rest, but I think they make up for it by adding a good amount of detail to their sculpts and paint. Sucks that she’s also a victim of some pvc price hikes I’ve noticed though… This 1/6 Kanu is a little bit more expensive than Daiki’s 1/5 Mai from a while back…

    I had my eye on Yamato’s Creator’s Labo Jingai Makyou Ignis, but yea…after hearing a ton of comments saying “prototype looks good, but final product will look nothing like it,” I’m thinking twice about it lol. That and also since it’s a PVC, i wonder how that pose is going to be held up…
