The scourge of Manga collectors: Double Volumes
I was able to avoid a problem that most manga collectors experience sooner or later: buying a volume double.This weekend I became one of those poor souls aswell…While I was around town, I came across a bookstore and took a casual look at the manga section.I spotted there a supposedley new volume of one of the mangas Im collecting.I picked it up without further thought and went to the counter to buy it.Back home it struck me when I took a closer look at it and realized that its already a volume I own.That shop usually puts a receipt in the plastic bag together with the books you purchase but of course the girl behind the counter didnt.No chance to turn the manga in YAY!
This makes me wonder how are you keeping account of your Manga collection and how are you avoiding doubles?I bet theres something like an MyAnimeList for Mangas out there in the web but that doesnt prove useful when you are outside on a shopping spree.I usally order my manga online and can doublecheck if i already own the volume i intend to order.
1-0 for online shopping!
If i have a really big crave for manga and buy them in the city i usally write up a list with the latest volumes.This works great aswell even tough its a bit time consuming.Didnt pick up a double that way either.The impulse shopping is on a whole other level tough.All i can rely on to avoid double volumes is my mind and that doesnt seem to work properly sometimes.It works well with mangas that have a few volumes but the longer a manga gets the harder it is to remember the latest cover or storyline.My advice is to avoid buying a volume you arent 100% sure of.the chance that youll buy a double is pretty high
So what are your tricks?How many double volumes do you own? Are you one of the lucky dudes/dudettes that doesnt have one?
PS: Please bear with this half done theme.I need to do some testing right now to fix some issues

Today I faced the similar situation and I stared at a manga in the bookstore for ages (wondering whether I’ve bought it before). I suggest coming up with a shopping list of the mangas that you’re going to get before heading to the bookstore. If it’s on the list, get it. If not, do not get the manga at all cost because there’s bound to be another copy hiding somewhere at home.
There was once when I bought another copy of the same title but fortunately my bookstore was compassionate enough to let me swoop titles. My lesson learn from that incident was, “When in doubt, hold your horses and not buy the manga”. (:

I own more than 40 vols, but since 80% was online I always checked to see if i’m ordering a duplicate (I can’t remember what was the last volume for which series).
the only mistake i made was ordering the light novel ver of strawberry panic instead it manga
All my only orders are from http://www.bookdepository.co.uk , they’re cheap and have free delivery worldwide no matter how much you order

I actually own several doubles by now. D:
One bought just about a week ago.
I can’t remember what I already have at times. D:
(Unrelated, but I like the style you’re experimenting with. I thought you said you disliked dark designs?)

I usually do that with comics rather than manga. What I do is stare and stare at the manga then wait to buy it another time after I have made sure that I don’t already have it. Of course that’s impractical if your out at a shop you usually don’t shop at.

Aaahhh you just reminded me of the doubles I have! i’m usually pretty good since if I’m unsure I just wait ’til the next time I go for a manga run. i think i’ve had 3 total so far, but the most recent i was able to return. the other two were waaaay past the return date when I finally decided to try – rosario & vampire vol 2 and the lucky star fan book (well, “official guide book” i guess it the actual title).

still not double volumes but you could do like Konata-chan (Lucky star). She owned 3 copies of everything.. For Otaku, for storing and for reading…Lol

I don’t read manga, but I understand how annoying it is when one accidently buys a double, and it’s even more annoying when you can’t return it >_< Myanimelist does have a manga list, and I think you can keep up with how many volumes you’ve read so far if I recall.

Das Problem kenne ich – wirklich ärgerlich. Passiert mir vor allem immer mit DVDs. Mit Figuren ist mir das zum Glück noch nie passiert. Doch wer weiss, vielleicht schon bald. Denn auch ein Fruchtbrot wird langsam an. Meine Nichte fängt schon an mich mit Ojisan anzusprechen. OH SHI..!

@meronpan
3 doubles isnt that bad^^
I amazed you actually bought something like a fanbook twice.I think thats easier to remember than Volume Y of Manga X
@phossil
I instantly thought of Konata when i realized that i bought a double^^
@q

The Manga List renders unpractical when youre out to shop tough
@meronpan

Looooll Indeed, it happens frequently. I believe that the greatest number of duplicate volumes are in my collection of manga Angel Heart Tsukasa Hojo ^ ^ 10 euros each, it hurts ! you can always sell your double or offer to someone. It is Christmas after all

Ouch 10 €uro ! Sadly noone i knows collects the series or could use Vol 15 of it.

You bought twice a manga, it’s not like if you bought twice a figure
Posted on December 26th, 2008 at 18:12
Buying a figure twice would be absolutely horrible!
It easier to sell them off though
Im happy i can remember all my figures so far ^^

I’ve yet to buy a double of a manga, though my collection is small. I do have to stop and think for a minute because I usually never plan to go to the bookstore to get a manga, it just happens because I’m in the area and then I have to ponder what volume I’m up to.

I am like you, I forgot whether I bought the manga.. And well I don’t read my manga immediately after buying.. So it took me months later to notice that I had a spare copy. And I didn’t have the receipt to go swoop another volume >_>

@persocom

I buy almost all my manga on Amazon and it has a little note that says “you bought this item on such and such a date” on the listing page. I also have an excel sheet of all my manga, back before I could buy manga online I reduced the size of that sheet and carried it around in my wallet. I’m pretty anal about keeping my manga organized. I’ve recently had to start packing up my manga for a move and the excel sheet is very handy for keeping track of which manga is in which boxes.

I arrived a bit late …
Sorry to double your purchase and especially the lady behind the counter forgot your ticket.
My tip is a list I created in word, I will update it to each of my purchases. If I do not then I leave then bought the book “not belong” and I will not forget to include it then …
