Akatsuki and the red light

I always thought that my red chinese lantern, I bought about a year ago,would make a cool prop to use and tried to bring it in as a background in one of my shootings.While I was taking pictures I suddenly got the idea to use the lantern as lightsource and this photo series was born.The Lack of any new figures and the fact that I never really took any serious pictures of Akatsuki made her my girl of choice.Im quite pleased and suprised how the pictures turned out!

More After the Jump!

Im suprised how a change of colour of the lighting is able to change the whole perception of a figure.I like how the red light draws the viewers attention to the outer lines and  every small wrinkle of the clothes aswell as her eyes.I simply love how prominent her eyes have become in these pictures.The Images of her dark alter ego depicted in the artbook come to mind with her overthrowing aura.The small single lightsource comes with a price tough: I had to bump up the ISO to 200 and the noise became quite strong.I cant Imagine how pictures are supposed to look with the ISO 1200 setting the camera is capable of.

I hope you enjoy the result as much as i do!^^

  1. Hm, interesting lighting. Very nice shoot :) .

  2. Lol interesting, this. Lanterns (typo spotted near top) are not a good lighting except for interesting shoots like this though.

  3. Interesting…very interesting…
    Pretty nice…
    Maybe I should consider messing with light colors…

  4. I love the lighting used. things change and it goes well with the figure.

  5. Intersting method. Creates an really mysterious ambience.

  6. Now that’s the dangerous Akatsuki where I don’t wanna mess around with. lol
    I wonder if u will get the same result with Mei Feng using a green light? :)

  7. I agree with Optic. You should use the same concept with Mei Feng and Rize. Green light for Mei Feng and Blue light for Rize :p

    My 2 cents

  8. Very good idea to have used this red light… besides Akatsuki Mishiro is one of my favorite figures <3
    As you said it, it gives a different feeling. I wonder if you had used 2 light sources, it would have been better… more areas would have been seeable. Anyway artistically nice to see ;)

  9. Its a good idea and a very good use of the light in the photoshoot. The photos are great!

  10. @M12
    Thanks!It was a coincidence that it worked out this well

    @Rin
    Why not giving it a try?You can delete bad pictures afterwards

    @panther
    Thanks,fixed it.We say Laterne in Germany so i assumed it would be called latern in English.Yeah they usually arent good for lighting but pretty great if you want to have a certain mood.in reallife

    @lylibellule
    Thanks alot!I like your shots aswell

    @Hikky
    Its amazing how a little change of lighting can change the whole mood of a picture

    @Optic
    Me neither^^
    I wonder aswell…Now where to i get a green light?

    @louki
    Yeah it would be an interesting experience for sure.I wonder where to get a green and blue lantern from tough.

    @jintoo
    Thank you! As for beeing more areas visible…Well if i had another latern i could have used it.I think that some of the pictures charme come from the low visibility of some areas though

    @phossil
    Thanks! It was just an Idea that turned out good^^

  11. awesome pictures, they turned out a lot better than some test ones I tried with my (lol) mouse light XD I did take some green/yellow/red/blue lighted pictures for a couple figures but that was when I was still too new at taking them for figures to make them turn out good. You did an excellent job though, the red light effect is very nice. I’d lend you my green light if I could XD

  12. Ohh, nice and interesting approach of doing a figure photoshoot… =D
    Maybe you could include a normal picture in the end just so that we can see the detail and the normal color of the figure.

  13. Interesting, interesting. It doesn’t look easy to take photo with as the light source isn’t very strong. The mood / feel of the pictures does change quite a lot. Nice experiment there!

  14. hey bro, u are using a DSLR right? ISO 200 should be alright. i use ISO 200 for most of my day shots and ISO 400 for night shoot where light is lesser.

  15. With the red light, she looks dark, mysterious, cunning, stylish, sexy all in one shot… I think it was a great use of a prop in this case

  16. Sweet! The red monochrome thing looks cool with Mishiro.

  17. Looks good with red light , she looks bloody serious :p

  18. @persocom
    Mouselight?LOL!
    Thanks for the praise.I dont think these pictures wouldnt have turned out this good without the tripod. A veeeery Long exposure time was needed (8 secs i think) and thats quite hard to do freestyle.

    @kazearashi
    I actually thought that everyone knows Akatsuki by now since she was so hyped around this time last year.Ill try my best to add a picture later

    @Q
    It required some testing but after that it wasnt that hard.I didnt expect such a differnt mood when i started.I wonder how other lights will influence it

    @gordon
    Nah…I have no fancy DSLR ^^;; My Camera is a Point and Shoot one
    Its the Nikon CoolPix P50. Thanks for the tip nevertheless!

    @violinkid
    Thanks alot! The magic of color is astounding isnt it?

    @superrats
    I guess any Girl with attitude looks cool with red light

    @james
    Yeah i wouldnt wanna mess with her

  19. the figure with the red light, look awesome.

    also the pictures do ;)

    I need a new cam >_< xD

  20. Thanks alot!
    The cam im using is a relatively “cheap” one.I paid 90 €uros at Saturn for it about 3-4 Months ago.Just look out for some offers of good branded cameras.You dont need to have a expensive cam to take some decent pictures. (Of course a DSLR is alot better)

  21. As the others above said this is interesting indeed, perhaps a bit more of dark on the background and “saturating” the picture a bit more she would become even more nice. My sister has a lava lamp and that gave me an idea which I might try some day

  22. She is actually my favorite Shuraki by far.

  23. The lighting made her look better :) Nice concept ^^
