I had nothing to do this weekend and I did the only thing a manly man like me would do : bake some Melonpan!
This was my first try at baking those sweet little caloriebombs and Im suprised they turned out this good.Follow me on my adventure to create the perfect substitute for the soon departing meronpan or the international version of our beloved swiss melonpan after the jump!
Sadly im not blessed with a japanese grandmother that wrote a book with her ultra secret recipes. Therefore ill have to rely on the interwebs and its various options.I went with NekoBento`s recipe and the outcome was okay but not really good.More on that later…
This is what you need according to Nekobento:
- Flour
- Yeast
- Sugar
- Butter
- Water
- a Egg
- Salt
- Flavouring
You start off with mending the flour, egg, butter, flavour and sugar to a pretty strong dough
It should now look something like this.Wrap it in some foil and put it in the fridge. Were gonna make the main dough now and were gonna mend flour, salt, water+yeast and butter.
Form little round dough balls, bring them somewhere warm and let the yeast do its work.In the meantime we are rolling the first dough out and after waiting for 15 minutes we wrap them around the balls.Stick the top of the melonpans into some sugar and use a knive to give them the typical pattern.Wait an aditional 30 minutes and put them into the oven
TADA!
Okay you may have wondered by now why I have written a foodpost on this blog…Well its actually pretty easy: the melonpans turned out pretty tasty but they still lacked the fluffyness Im used to from my favorite japanese bakery.I know that some of you out there DO bake ( Hynavian? ^^) and Id like to get some hints on how to improve them.I cant tell if its due to my lack of bakingskills or a fault in the recipe.
I have seen Yakitate Japan and know that there are alot different ways to bake them
Hope to hear some nice recipes!
And a question to all the manly guys: Do you bake? XD
