Melon?Pan!

I had nothing to do this weekend and I did the only thing a manly man like me would do : bake some Melonpan!

This was my first try at baking those sweet little caloriebombs and Im suprised they turned out this good.Follow me on my adventure to create the perfect substitute for the soon departing meronpan or the international version of our beloved swiss melonpan after the jump!

Sadly im not blessed with a japanese grandmother that wrote a book with her ultra secret recipes.Therefore ill have to rely on the interwebs and its various options.I went with NekoBento`s recipe and the outcome was okay but not really good.More on that later…

This is what you need according to Nekobento:

  • Flour
  • Yeast
  • Sugar
  • Butter
  • Water
  • a Egg
  • Salt
  • Flavouring

You start off with mending the flour,egg,butter,flavour and sugar to a pretty strong dough

It should now look something like this.Wrap it in some foil and put it in the fridge.Were gonna make the main dough now and were gonna mend flour,salt,water+yeast and butter.

Form little round dough balls,bring them somewhere warm and let the yeast do its work.In the meantime we are rolling the first dough out and after waiting for 15 minutes we wrap them around the balls.Stick the top of the melonpans into some sugar and use a knive to give them the typical pattern.Wait an aditional 30 minutes and put them into the oven

TADA!

Okay you may have wondered by now why I have written a foodpost on this blog…Well its actually pretty easy: the melonpans turned out pretty tasty but they still lacked the fluffyness Im used to from my favorite japanese bakery.I know that some of you out there DO bake ( Hynavian? ^^) and Id like to get some hints on how to improve them.I cant tell if its due to my lack of bakingskills or a fault in the recipe.

I have seen Yakitate Japan and know that there are alot different ways to bake them

Hope to hear some nice recipes!

And a question to all the manly guys: Do you bake? XD

Giving back some love!

    I once baked some melonpan too, I even made some Shakugan no shana-sized (you know, as large as shana’s head), but sadly, I’ve never tasted melonpan from a real bakery.

    Yours look good !

  2. Persocom Said,

    I must try to make this. I do bake/make food, but my first try at dango and sushi went rather poorly so I didn’t post about them. I do however plan on doing some food related posts in the future.

    I don’t bake. My sister does all the baking like the banana muffins, pancakes, cheese cake etc.
    Yeah, that’s what sisters are for right? :P

    I wouldn’t mind trying some home made style melon pan. ^^

    Wow!!!! Makes me wanna bare more again… There were times I just went through the Nigella cookbook and made tons of cakes n stuff. Snickerdoodles were one of my faves. Just cos they have an awesome name!!! They taste good too lol.

    Ohhh this makes me wanna bake again… but baking in the nasty student kitchen….not gonna happen… next time I go home for a visit….. then I will….

    As for 09 stuff… this is probably some of my most recent. Aswell as the mascot which was in DC member news a while back…. lol
    http://meimi132.wordpress.com/2008/12/07/more-blog-mascot-ideas-feedback-please/ Theres some stuff on my deviantart too, but not updated that in a while, not with that kinda artwork anyways, last 3 entries were from life drawing class… lol

    A Shana-sized Melonpan?How olong did that one take to make and bake?

    @persocom
    I think that Dango and Sushi are siginficantly more difficult than Melonpan.I once made some Hanami Dangos with my brother but their consistency felt somehow funky.It felt weird to chew them

    @optic
    I have an older sister *cough*16 years older *cough* shes busy with her children and I actually never tried any baked goods from her.Ive gotta tell her that optic said that shes supposed to bake more stuff for her brothers ^_^

    @Jayman
    Im a chef when it comes to baking frozen pizza *pats himself on the back*

    @meimi
    I cant bake in my flat either.Gotta drive home to mommy when I need to bake something^^
    So what exactly are Snickerdoodles? That sounds ummm…interesting…I guess Snickers are an essential part of it?
    Man im so stupid that i forgot about your mascot doodles…i even posted a comment back then ^^;

    @jayman
    LOL Ive gotta agree with you

  11. Jem Said,

    @Blow: This is a great post from a manly man ;]

    My husband cooks a fair amount. He’s nowhere near as good as my dad, but at least he can cook. I never cooked while living with my parents because they were afraid that we’d burn the house. I would bake brownies behind their backs.

    Now, I am one lean cooking machine. We’ve baked cookies and quiche, but no bread. Hey, speaking of bread, have you ever watched Yakitate! ? It’s a great, long anime series about bread making, bread contests and Azuma’s conquest to making a bread that represents his country. I <3 that series.

    Happy V-day to you!

  12. Q Said,

    Wow you made your own meronpan? Awesome!

    I don’t cook very often, so the chance of me baking is even slimmer ^^; But it’s nice to see someone trying out to bake one as I’ve actually read the recipe for one while blogging about meronpans and pineapple buns some time ago.

    But still, I wanna try out some of your meronpan right NOW XD

  14. Hynavian Said,

    I’m late in commenting!

    The fluffiness is dependent on a variety of factors; mainly temperature, baking time, and amount of yeast. Because I have never baked a melon pan before, sorry I’m not of much help here. But continue experimenting with and you’ll get a fluffy set one day! (:

    PS: Can I have 1 melon pan plssssssssssssssss. :p

    Aber ich muss sagen, deine Melonpans sehen definitv besser aus als meine.

  16. Shiken Said,

    Here’s how my very first batch turned out:

    http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/2957/melonpanv10cru9.jpg

    The shape broke up a bit the first time, but I’ve made it several more times since then and got better at it.

    Here’s my super simple “anyone could do it” recipe:

    buy a roll of sugar cookie dough and 1 or 2 rolls of dinner rolls

    wrap the dinner rolls topside in sugar cookie dough and press into a bun shape

    imprint lines into the cookie dough, cook, and enjoy!

    Never having had the real thing, I’m sure the taste differs quite a bit, but I do know that they are freaking delicious!

    well it was the first time i made them all by myself ^^

    @phossil
    I can cook a little aswell but Im a pretty lazy guy and end up using conienience store products instead of cooking proper food

    @Eternal
    You should try baking some or even better let your mother/sister bake them for you ^^

    @Jem
    Yeah ive watched Yakitate Japan and really liked this different take on the shounen Genre!The reactions to the different kind of bread were so funny

    @Q
    If i remember right your mother knows how to bake Pineapple pan right? Care to share the recipe? ^^

    @Rin
    Food posts make me hungry aswell

    @Hynavian
    I tried to bake them again a few days ago with the double amount of yeast and while they were pretty fluffy in the beginning they became quite flat a few hours later.Im still doing something wrong…Youll get a melonpan when im getting some of your cookies!

    @JimmPantsu
    Ja die Dinger machen wirklich schnell satt.Wenn ich mir die beim Japaner hole kann ich trotzdem nen ganzen Haufen verdrücken ohne satt zu werden.Wo wohl der Trick dabei ist?

    @Shiken
    As long as they are tasty i dont care about the shape! Thanks for your recipe! Might try that one in the future

    Also wenn ich gekaufte mit meinen selbstgemachten vergleiche, da ist der Teig bei den gekauften doch schon ne ecke luftiger gewesen. Deswegen kann man da wohl mehr verdrücken^^
