Spicy Wolf – 1/8 Horo

Posted by Blowfish On June - 1 - 2009

Thank God that today is an holiday!Finally some time to do one of my long awaited figure shoots.My first target is a charming Wolf that knows quite a bit about dirty business tactics and not so much about love.Lets check out the Wise Deity Wolf!

It seems that everyone loves the tale of a merchant and his non-chalant companion since the Anime did pretty well and the second season is juts around the corner.The Anime is actually based on a Light Novel and the Art Direction of both differs a bit.If you are interested in seeing a PVC Rendition of  the LN Horo be sure to check out Optics Review.GSC are the first to release a PVC figure of the Anime Horo as far as I know and they already went all out and made the most customizable figure in my collection.Pants?Ears?Hat?Dress? You can mix everything to your liking but we all know that the only true way to display Horo is with her Wolf Ears :P The Castoff mechanism is pretty well hidden but as always with castoff it would have looked better without it.Thats the price you gotta pay for beeing customizable

The downside of the whole thing is that shes quite expensive for such a small figure but the execution of the figure is top notch as expected of GSC.The only thing that isnt up to GSC`s reputation are her ears: they need some gentle force to slide into her head.Meronpan pointed out that her face is slightly off with her chinline beeing a little bit too round in contrast to her relatively sharp chin in the anime.im not really concernd by this and to be honest I didnt even notice until ive read meronpans post.

This shoot proved rather critical since i nearly lost one of her ears during it.One of her ears managed to sneak out of her package and I luckily noticed this when i was on my way home.Im glad i still remembered the place where I (un)-boxed her and the ear lied there in the grass.Doing Outdoorshoots with figures with many parts is quite thrilling ^^;;

I cant wait to see the new season and Id like to read the LightNovels to further dive into the Spice and Wolf Universe.Does anyone know if theres an english release of the LN?

It was really enjoyable to read the Kino no tabi Light Novel and i bet its the same with Spice and Wolf

This reminds me that one of the dominant languages in Spice and Wolf seems to be German.Its always a joy to see my mother tongue appear in Animes ^^

GSC did include an Cast-off sheet unlike some other company *cough* Megahouse*cough*

    She’s cute, but something about her face seems off… her tail is so cute though~

  2. jintoo Said,

    Time is missing… unfortunately for all of us : I didn’t have the time to take pics for one of my review =/
    Well to focus on the real topic : I do not know at all the anime >_< time is once again missing to watch all animes that I would like to.
    Any way in comparison to optic’s figure (Kotobukiya’s version), I prefer your fig because of what express the face : she’s has something malicious :P Besides the outside backgrounds give her something refreshing ^.^
    No pantsu?? so it’s not a real cast off !!! :P

  3. anonymous_object Said,

    Yay, more Horo owners. I really do like this figure ^^
    Looks like the ears on your Horo didn’t fit 100% either (like Smithy’s and Meronpans’). I wonder if I just got lucky with mine? ^^;

  4. Snark Said,

    Yeah, those ears don’t look very well attached…but eh, she looks better with the hat on anyway.

    And as always, your photography never fails to impress me >=D

  5. OneandonlyJem Said,

    I missed my chance to preorder this and now I’m just waiting for some of my favored avenues to get her before I decide to do a hunt. I am leaning towards the Volks Horo who is beautiful to me, too.

    Great pictures. They have a good and impressive quality. I like when you use the outdoors as backgrounds for your photoshoots.

  7. meronpan Said,

    love how the pictures turned out! having a nice outdoor backdrop always feels like a breath of fresh air after looking at my pics ^^;;

    good thing you found her ear! i’ve had pieces fall off figures as i was shifting them around… nothing like a frantic search to get the heart rate up ^^;;

  8. Optic Said,

    I have my hopes high in one day getting her. Considering I’m happy with my Light Novel one, I’m not in a big rush.
    Great outdoor shoot. I really wanna get back into my backyard and do a shoot there as it’s a bushland out there but rain has forced me to hold it off. It’s winter here now so I can’t really complain. T_T

  9. Gargron Said,

    I can’t say much on figures, but one’s clear: she’s not as cute as in the anime and not even a half as cute as in the manga.

    Horo definitely desire a outdoor shoot^^ Ok, the perfect time would be fall und the perfect place a cornfield but who want to wait so long?^^”

    Nice shooting. I wanted to buy her after the release) but finally something me saddens on the face’s expression. I don’t manage to know why.. . But thanks for this presentation!

  12. Roy Said,

    She looks great and lovely photos you took their :)
    Glad you found her ear ^^ If you lost that you probably had to make her wear the hat all the time, though I love that hat ^^ I lost Hazels beam handle and never found it again T-T

    And since I have the summer of from school I can watch more Anime, might give this one a try >.>

  13. hikky Said,

    Great pics. Looks really good with that natural background. Can’t do that because Hikikomori-mode is active since one month.
    The ear attachment fail is something I wouldn’t have expected from GSC.
    The anime? Well, the only reason I watched it was a certain character ^_^

    @FlyingBlow: She does seem pretty cute. But smaller figures for higher prices? Hehe, sounds like a scam to me! Range… {Cough-cough} Murata… {Cough-cough} >_<;

  16. Blowfish Said,

    @Marshmallow
    Yeah,theres something off about her face but I dont really mind.Theres still something like Artistic Interpretation of a character and it portrays her enough that I can say that she IS Horo and not another Fox Harvest Deity.

    @Jintoo
    Us hardworking citizens dont have too much time at the moment huh?^^
    Gosh its been ages since i replied to my comments….Back to topic:
    This Horo isnt 100% spot on either but I really like this interpretation of Horo.Spice and Wolf is some kinda Love/Hate Anime.It hasnt got much pacing or Action but is really great concerning the subtle things.Its really a taste matter.Some like it and some dont

    @anonymous_object
    Yeah looks like you were lucky and got a flawfless deity while ours seems to be a bit bitchy when it comes to her ears^^

    @snark
    Too bad i prefer her with ears ^^;
    Stop flattering me with your praise.Im not used to that ^^

    @Jem
    Yeah Volks Horo definately has the certain IT aswell.I really like the diorama like base and if you acquire her i cant wait for some pictures.I didnt really bother thinking about ordering Volks figures yet since they are so hard to get

    @phossil
    Thanks alot man! Seems like im the only one that isnt happy how my pictures turn out^^;

    @meronpan
    Thanks alot! Im envious of your pictures though!
    Talk about frantic searches!One of my figures that carried the figma bag has fallen down the cupboard a few days ago and i frantically had to search for the bags handle.Took me a good 30 minutes until i found the lil bugger: still on the cupboard….. XD

    @optic
    Like i wrote in my comment back then I do like your Horo aswell.I really like how they applied the “grass” to the base.Dang! Its Winter over there.Totally forgot that you are on the other side of the cube.Be sure to take some awesome pics in the winter!!

    @Gargon
    Im not a big fan of Cuteness and I didnt even know that Horo qualifies as a cute character.Oh well…she represents Horo well enough for me.I didnt even know that theres a Spice and Wolf Manga.I guess it isnt avaiable in English either?

    @Leonia
    Awww…Too Bad! Shes a real nice figure but if her face bothers you,you better wait for another Horo.I bet therell be some others after the second season

    @Roy
    Thanks alot Roy!
    As ive written earlier the Anime is a real Love/Hate thing.Give it a try! If you fall in the first category youll love it.I wish i still had those long summer breaks with doing nothing but watching stuff :P

    @JimmPantsu
    Mann, du hast mich ja richtig verstört mit deinem Englischen Kommentar.Musste ich doch direkt nochmal lesen obs wirklich Pantsu war der das verfasst hat.
    Errrrm…
    I thought exactly the same thing but the corn fields arent ready yet and i didnt wanna wait until fall for this shoot.God knows if the weather allows to to take pictures in fall^^
    I really had to check why you made the ichigo comment until ive seen some hiding in the background^^

    @Hikky
    Ah so youre into Lawrence? XD
    You and your Hikikomori ways….I guess Ill hire a Misaki this Japan Day and send her over to Austria.

    @Feldi
    Thanks! Well….How do I choose my locations?I have certain areals in my mind where i could take the pictures and I usually go around looking for nice spots when im there.For instant ive walked all around the fields last weekend but couldnt find a proper spot and well the green cornfield didnt look impressive either.In the end i went with a simple nature background since it fits a Wolf aswell

    @jay
    I was able to avoid the Range Murata figures until now.As much as i adore them 1/10 is an absolute no go for me.1/8 is the smallest i can take

  17. Persocom Said,

    I’m guilty of having the first season on my HD but having only seen the first episode. I should just sit down and watch it tonight huh? Not really any reason I didn’t keep going, I just found other stuff and kind of forgot to watch it. Anyways, I really love the outdoor pictures, this figure just screams to be let loose from the confines of a room XD Glad you didn’t lose that ear forever, I’ve had a few close calls with Figma parts going down the heat vent and such :x

  18. T.I.P. Said,

    Great photos. I really love outdoor photoshoots, too bad I’m still scared of getting my girls dirty, so indoor shoots will have to suffice for me. :(

    I need to add Spice and Wolf to my watch list…and then actually watch it. It’s a great figure, too bad I haven’t watched Spice and Wolf to give Horo any love…maybe I’ll regret not getting her after watching.

    And I didn’t notice that MegaHouse doesn’t include instruction sheets in their cast-off figures until reading your review, but their cast-off is so trivial that I can live without them…unlike the fancy methods that GSC uses.

  19. lightningsabre Said,

    I could’ve sworn I commented here already… Maybe it was somebody else’s Horo ^^;
    Anyhow… I kinda don’t like the removable ears here… it looks a bit loose and not sticking to the hair much.

    I have heard the light novels have been licensed by Yen Press… So eventually it’ll come out. Let’s hope they don’t mess up the paperback cover the way they did with Haruhi >_< I am also looking forward to the novels, though the anime was quite detailed in covering one arc that I think the anime is as good as the novels :)

    Nice surroundings for the photoshoot. Very suitable for Holo. I am waiting for mine to come. Will be another 2-3 weeks I think. ^_^”

  21. Q Said,

    I like the use of nature as the background as it fits Horo pretty well here. Kinda not used to seeing her without the skirt thing, but that’s mainly because I haven’t watched the anime yet. Btw how tall is this Horo exactly? I remember seeing it on meronpan and it does look tiny for the price, but the customisation does seem to pay it off though as you said.

  22. JimmPantsu Said,

    Habe ich den Blowfish tatsächlich verstört, muhaha xD

    Interesting, that you didn´t saw the ichigos at the shoot^^

    Yeah, a green corn field doesn´t look that great when it is green. At least on photos. When the wind blows through the corn field, it looks great. Even if the field is green. But it´s nearly impossible to become that on a picture.

  23. aprilius20 Said,

    Wonder if they’ll make a figure of that trader guy, for Horo to pick on…
    Liked the outdoor setting, by the way:)

    I’m sad I missed this figure but I already had the Cospa one so I couldn’t convince myself to buy this one as a result. BUT I did order a diferent heavenly Horo that I’m quite excited about.

    Finally got my computer fixed and I am taking time to visit my blogroll now. Spice and Wolf huh, I haven’t watched it but I have thought about it several times. Might have to give it a try now.

  27. Smithy Said,

    Nice photoshoot, very crisp and sharp photos too. ^^

    Indeed, looks like your Horo has the exact same ill fitting ears as mine. Wonder how come some have it and others not… different production batch maybe?
    How is the hair seam near the ear plug holes on yours?

    Posted on June 7th, 2009 at 20:26

  28. Quazacolt Said,

    Nice pictures, definitely love the outdoor shots and for Horo, its gotta be an outdoor like setting :D

    as for the ears, you can try to put it in in a *slight* circular motion (too much and you may damage the ear/joint) and eventually it’ll fit the whole thing with barely any seam line unless inspected up close.
    additionally you can try to sand it to make it fit better ;)
    of course, different pvc owners have different perspectives on pointing tools (like, a cutter) against their PVC XD

    btw you checked out tenso? seems pretty cheap for a proxy service as they uses weight as charges. and yes, ill be orderring volks horo. after that, the only horo im missing is cospa resinya’s horo which im reluctant to get, but eh, considering my rather ‘vast’ Horo collections… seems like a logical (read: retarded) thing to do >.>

    @jimmpantsu: horo <3 ringo :P
    but lol i didnt even noticed until blowfish replied

    @persocom: WATCH IT!

    @smithy: it could be how you put the ears in, it is a little bit tricky imo

    Posted on June 10th, 2009 at 07:50

  29. Blowfish Said,

    @Persocom
    Im glad you finally checked it out!
    Yeah you definately have to be careful with all those optional parts.I would kick myself in the butt if i lost one of her ears.

    @T.I.P.
    I can understand your fear of dirtying your babies but its definately worth the effort since outdoor pics turn out real nice.You should check out Spice and Wolf since its a really nice series.Its sometimes a lil bit slowpaced but if you dont need action all the time a nice way to spend the evening.

    @Lightningsabre
    Hehe well atleast you find time to comment on peoples blog unlike me ^^;;
    The Kino Light Novels were covered pretty accurately by the Anime aswell but i really enjoyed to read them aswell.Hope to hear something about it soon

    @ELTboy
    Im waiting eagerly for your review! I wonder if your ears will fit or be a bitch like mine

    @Q
    Im gonna repeat myself once more and say that the anime is worth checking out.Theres more to it than just Horo^^
    Horo is definately on the tiny side even for a 1/8 figure.Shell look fine with the right 1/8 figures next to her though.

    @Jimm Pantsu
    Yeah,there are many awesome things that are hard to capture with the camera

    @aprilius20
    Well the fact that lawrence is a dude and not GAR in any way reduces the chances of him beeing made greatly. :(

    @Lovelyduckie
    Yeah,that Horo looks quite neat aswell but I didnt wanna spend so much effort on getting her

    @M12
    Thanks!

    @wolfheinrich
    Your name contains wolf so you should definately watch the anime!!! ^_^
    Haha I havent found time to comment on blogs either

    @smithy
    The Hair seam looks alright with mine.Whats the problem with yours?
    I guess the problem with the ears has to be different production batches.Cant really think of another reason

    @Quazacolt
    Hehe those ideas seem to be a little raducal for me.I guess ill live with the gap between her head and ears.Havent really bothered to check out Tenso for real until now since itll open a whole new market for me and thats dangerous for my finances ^^;

    Posted on June 11th, 2009 at 23:50

  30. Quazacolt Said,

    well the ear joins are mainly ABS, so they will be tough. by tough i mean they wont warp/break easily. and by “circular” i was sorta referring to left/right motion twist while ur pushing the ears in. the gaps will be a lot less obvious unless for a reall up close macro. a little impossible to get 0 seamline/gaps as the ears will begin to scratch the hair’s paint :P
