Cospa Quality?

Posted by Blowfish On November - 10 - 2009

cospa body

Made of 100-percent polyester inside and out, this lovely long pillow body is the perfect size to fill a 50 x 150cm pillowcase! Cospa quality!

This Image and item descrition are taken directly from the corresponding Item page on HLJ and this sounds like a good way to fill up your empty dakimakuras right? No,its not…Wonder why? Answers directly after the jump!

Cospa is one of those anime merchandise brands that has myriads of products ranging from keyholders over mugs to tshirts.Compared to their competitors they have a reputation to deliver top quality goods which is clearly resembled in the steep price of their products.So far I havent heard a single complaint about the so called Cospa quality and decided to snatch myself a Cospa Dakimakura Body when the opportunity arrives.Said Opportunity was taken during HLJs free EMS Shipping Offer and I instantly added a Cospa Dakimakura Body to my cart.A few weeks later,thanks to slow german customs,it finally arrived at my doorstep.I was planning to do a review of the body and documented the unpacking of the pillow.This turned out to be a very lucky turn of events for me since it all went downhill from there…

The Pillow arrived deflated and vacuum sealed as expected

Genuine Cospa Product

I opened the packaging and the pillow deflated with a satisfying sound.This was when I was getting the first doubts since the pillow was as limp as a hotdog on a hot day.My first idea was that the pillow and its filling need a proper time to deflate and I gave the whole thing another 3 days to accomodate to its surrounding.Those 3 days didnt change a thing though and it remained in its hotdog state.

After unpacking

After 3 days…

My next thought was that something with the filling of the pillow couldnt be right because it  felt like if its filled with cotton.The polyester hull of the pillow allows some semi-translucency when held against light and I was quite shocked when I saw what the pillows innards looked like.

Oh really?

This is where I panicked and mailed several other bloggers and asked them how their cospa dakimakuras felt and looked like.Ive got the same response from everybody: a strong,thick pillow that could never be bent in way like mine is able to.My Kudos go out to LightningSabre and Smithy who really,really helped me out there.

This dakimakura is clearly flawed and I am amazed that this actually made it through Cospas Quality Check.Where is that famed Cospa Quality?This couldnt have happened during shipping since it was still sealed so it had to be flawed when it left the factory!

This is where I emailed HLJs Customer service and after a few days I got the following reply:

Hi

Thanks for writing.

We’re very sorry to hear about this problem. Please ship the pillow back to us here at HobbyLink Japan as follows:

*Package the item up very well in a good box, especially if our shipping box was damaged.

*Enclose a copy of this correspondence in the package.

*Mark this on the outside of the box: “CONTENTS MADE IN JAPAN.”

*Ship the item back to us via the post office, and send it by REGISTERED SMALL PACKET AIR MAIL.

*Send the package to this address:

HobbyLink Japan

Sano-shi, Kurohakama-cho 162-1

Tochigi 327-0813 JAPAN

When your item arrives back here in Japan, we will send it to Cospa for replacement or refund.  We will also refund the cost of return shipping.

Again, please accept our apologies for the problem and the inconvenience this has caused you.

Thank you very much for shopping with HobbyLink Japan.

I am happy that HLJ accepted to replace/refund the dakimakura body without a complaint but its still a bummer I have to send the body back.The Pillow is huge and I knew that this is going to cost me quite a sum,to be precise it costed me 62€ to send the body back.Yes,I paid 62 € to send a 38€ Item back to HLJ :(

HLJ told me that theyll refund the shipping costs and I hope that theyll keep their word since 62€ are quite a sum.

I wonder how long this whole process will take since HLJ forwards the body and I hope Cospa admits that they are at fault and dont try to act like I was treating it wrong or something the like.

How about you guys?Have you experienced any problems with Cospa Products so far or are you happy with what you got?I admit that faults do happen when you are manufacturing goods but to let those faulty goods with obvious flaws slip through Quality Control and to ship it to customers is a veeeeeery big fauxpax.

Cospa Quality? Non-existent for me.

My 10€ Discounter Side Sleeper Pillow is of better quality than this…True,it might not be the right size but atleast you can use it as a pillow!

In case anyone wonders how the body looked with Dakimakura

    Yikes. At least you’re getting a replacement. That just looked like a half filled sack of cotton balls.

    Yikes, that’s one deflated pillow. I got a pillow like that from Cospa too, and it wasn’t like that at all. Surprised also it slipped by their quality check.

    That is wacky. I’ve got a couple of dakimakura covers from Cospa but I bought the body pillow locally at a home furnishings store. Kanu definitely deserves to be stuffed with something much more firm and robust than that limp thing.

  4. Smithy Said,

    Still surprised this happened to you with a Cospa product, I have several of their shirts and know people who’ve had some hugging pillow bodies for years now and the quality is really superb.

    As I said earlier when I saw the photo where the inside stuffing can be seen, something clearly happened to this pillow during storage or manufacture. Decent qc should have picked up on fabrication flaws so I’m thinking something bad happened to the stuffing foam in storage.

    Cospa needs to provide you a new one, clearly, no doubts there.

    I am actually looking to get a pillow body but a little hesitant to order a Cospa one…

    Hope you get a replacement soon.

    Hmm… I am not really sure but the Bodys form Kuros, Nee-chans and Melonpans Dakimakuras should be from Cospa but there where absolutly no problems.

    The exception proves the rule? xD

    Ouch… 62 € for shipping? >_< Well at least HLJ did promise to pay back the shipping. Hopefully it won't be any more of a hassle for you here. It's really surprising when I saw what you got. I really wonder how this would happen though. The vacuum seal must've vacuumed more than it's should have =/

    Besides, quality doesn’t mean 100% perfect, you can’t assure that, it means they try…
    Also, HLJ customer support is pretty good, once Good Smile Company sends me (directly) the Saber Lily Nendoroid rod replacement and I write her review, I’ll talk on the issue, or when I make a post about them.

    @superrats
    Yeah,you can probably imagine the look on my face when I unboxed the pillow ^^;;

    @Kiyoura
    Yeah,I saw yours and yours looks alot fluffier.The Gintoki cover is pretty rad :P

    @Tier
    The problem is we only have pillows that are like 10 cm short in length and 5 cm in width.That doesnt sound that bad but actually looks pretty crappy.Like I said I do own a cheap one thats a bit too short on both ends^^

    @Smithy
    I can totally understand that you are now hestitant since its quite a hassle to return a product and get it replaced.Thats quite some money thats involved in the shipping process.

    @JefLebowski
    Seems like I am the only one with a bad cospa experience

    @JimmPantsu
    I thought you made your own?
    I asked MP in my Panic aswell and he said the same.
    Im just one unlucky dude recently ^^

    @Wolfheinrich
    Im pretty sure that you must have gotten a good one.I mean theyre reputation cant come from nothing right?Id like to hear about your pillow though

    @James
    I didnt choose such an ecchi dakimakura cover! It simply came with a Dengeki Fetsival Edition I ordered blindfolded. Well, I am ecchi nevertheless :P
    Good to see you back on the scene! ^_^

    @Ryobase
    I would do so aswell but we dont have matching sizes over here.The only resaon I ordered it back thenw as because it was free shipping.And now im having all that hassle :(

    @lightningsabre
    Id like to hear what happened with it too.There cant be that many reasons why a pillow ends up like that

    @lyli
    yup I have no luck recently :(

    @Guy
    Of course you can never assure a 100% quality product but this is far from beeing acceptable isnt it?I mean I could understand if there was a small hole or they didnt sew something right.Those faults can be easily overseen but something as obvious as this shouldnt leave the factory.
    Had some replacements by HLJ aswell but I never had to send the Item back so far.Thats why its quite a hassle

    @Yi
    Yeah,lets hope that they dont take months until they deliver ^^

    I’ve only had experience with a Cospa figure (Horo), mugs, and Cospa shirts. The figure was good quality and I must say I LOVE Cospa shirts, they’re VERY comfortable. I’ve put them through the wash several times now and the image on the shirt has yet to start cracking. Their mugs go through the dishwasher fine, I haven’t noticed any issues.

    I’m guessing this is all sorted now since this issue was a month ago? Did HLJ sent u out a new pillow or they gave u a refund or u requested a refund?
